Magnum RAM Card

It's been a long time coming, but at last it is possible to expand the RAM in a standard ST beyond the MMU limit of 4MB. The Magnum card, available soon from 16/32 Systems, adds an extra 8Mb of memory. The card will only work if it has TOS 2.06 ROMs fitted or if the ST is running MagiC.

Upgrading looks pretty simple -- there are full details on the Aixit web site. Unless you have a socketed 68000 processor you'll need a socket soldering into the machine and the Magnum then simply plugs into it.

Prices (in German DM):
Magnum ST 0 MB 229,00
Magnum ST 4 MB 259,00
Magnum ST 8 MB 279,00
Magnum ST 16 MB 379,00

All About Atari

In his "What Ever Happened To?" column in the March issue of Computer Shopper, John Dvorak has written an article on the history of Atari Corporation:

"Along the way it sued Nintendo over some perceived violation. In 1990 the company took a weak shot at the PC-compatible market with a machine introduced in the UK, called the ABC-386SX/40. It also released the 68030-based TT030 Workstation. Interest in these machines was lagging, and the company continued to milk the ST. In September of 1992 Atari took its last shot by showing a multimedia machine called the Falcon. Two weeks later the company shut down R&D and reported again that it was losing money."

Caldera DOS

Caldera, who have bought DR DOS from Novell, are giving away copies of DR DOS to 'not for profit' organisations. There's no news yet on what will be happening to the PC and Atari implementations of GEM. More details from the Caldera web site:

Electronic Cow

Just when the music press has written off the Atari as a viable tool for musicians along comes another new software house supplying music software. Electronic Cow write MIDI and Audio software for Atari computers, have two commercial titles on the market, and they are working on more new projects.

Sound Chip Synth v2.2a

MIDI Arpeggiator v1.11d

A miniature MIDI sequencer for creating arpeggio-type patterns. MIDI Arpeggiator can be used as a compositional aid (since patterns can be saved as type 0 or 1 MIDI files) to programs such as Cubase or Notator, or live (since all the functions can be performed in real-time). CAB 2.0

German publishers ASH have bought the rights to version 2 of the CAB Atari web browser and they will be releasing it as a commercial package. Although CAB will no longer be freeware there will be a free demo version that is fully functional, with the exception that the hotlist can't be saved and it'll have some annoying 'buy-me-now' dialog boxes. CAB 1.5 will remain freeware and will continue to be supported in the UK by Interactive.

CAB 2 runs on any Atari computer with at least 2MB of RAM and it runs in all screen resolutions. Some features, such as background music require the use of a multitasking operating system such as MagiC or Mint/N.AES.

CAB 2 is available at £19.95 from System Solutions. The demo version is available online or on FaST Club disks AP.405 and AP.406. CAB 1.5 is available on disk AP.942.

PPP link

WebSpace, the web browser from Oxo Concepts, now works online thanks to the arrival of PPP link.

WebSpace is now up to version 1.45b and in France it costs 290FF, so it'll probably arrive in the UK as a £39.95 product once Oxo have finalised their UK distribution.

TermiteTCP

Oregon Research are working on an Atari version of the Amiga TemiteTCP TCP/IP stack. It is a 100% BSD socket-compliant implementation of TCP/IP with integrated PPP driver. It fully supports all of the current Internet standards as specified in the RFC's. To set it up, all you need to know is your ISP's phone number and your user name and password. Everything else is automatically negotiated with the host. The base system will ship with FTP, Telnet, and e-mail clients as well as a software developers' kit for third party clients.

Oregon is rumoured to be working with the German developers and publishers of CAB so that CAB 2.0 will support TermiteTCP when it is released. Termite is written in hand-optimized assembly code, which means it's small and fast; the only bad news at the moment is that it still needs a multi-tasking version of TOS: MiNT or MagiC.

There's no official price or launch date for the Atari version of TermiteTCP; the Amiga version retails at $69.95 and comes with a 150-page manual. The UK distributor will probably be either HiSoft, who have sold all previous Oregon Research products, or System Solutions, who have the UK rights to the commercial release of CAB.
