To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu I thought this might be of some general interest (don't kill the messenger!): Northern California Jewish Bulletin, 9/6/91, page 16: "Israel finally OKs Atari deal, waiting for Tramiel" "After months of haggling and intrigue, Atari and Israel have cleared what may be the final hurdle allowing the computer company to set up a plant in Israel - but snags and wild rumors still persist. "The Israeli Cabinet gave its OK Sunday to the final phase of a deal for Atari to build a $150 million computer-parts plant there." The article continues giving the troubled history of the deal, detailing the specifics of the factory and associated investment company, and various accusations of foot-dragging on both sides. Continuing: "Meanwhile, a new twist further casts the deal in doubt - a rumor that Atari will file for bankruptcy. "[Israeli] Treasury officials said Sunday that an investigation by the accountant-general showed the computer giant is close to bankruptcy - placing doubt on whether the government will receive any returns from its generous package of grants and tax breaks to the factory." .. "Investment analysts in the Bay Area who follow Atari stock were entirely unaware of the Israeli Treasury report that Atari may go belly-up; Lee Isgur, an analyst at Volte and Welty and Co. laughed at the possibility - which he considered absurd - of Atari folding. "'If it were true, then their financial statement [released in early August] would be fallacious and they would be in jail,' said Isgur." -- ############################################################################## # Bill Sheppard -- bills@microware.com -- {uunet, sun}!mcrware!mwca!bill # # Microware Systems Corporation -- OS-9 / OS-9000 / CD-RTOS -- (408)980-0201 # ############# Opinions expressed are my own and usually wrong ################ ------------------------------ Date: 7 Sep 91 00:14:24 GMT From: noao!ncar!elroy.jpl.nasa.gov!swrinde!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!wupost!uwm.edu!b ionet!agate!boulder!horton.Colorado.EDU!chuj@arizona.edu (CHU JEFFREY) Subject: COMPATABILITY To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu In article <1991Sep06.104427.566@actrix.gen.nz> Roger.Sheppard@actrix.gen.nz (Roger Sheppard) writes: >In article <1991Sep5.194408.9402@colorado.edu> chuj@horton.colorado.edu (CHU JEFFREY) writes: > >From what I have read the Best is a NEC 3D, most of the otheres you >have to adjust them when to go from Colour to Mono, also have a look at >the Dot Pitch, go for one thats 0.28 mm I would love to purchase the NEC 3D, but the monitor is $550.00, I just don't wish to spend that much on a monitor that is interlaced at 1024x768. I was assuming that cfg_ch was available to all C libraries. Getch() and Putch() are commonly available it seems, but I only heard about cfg_ch in this newsgroup. In general though, I still think that the second method would be more compatible than the first, since it doesn't access the system directly by skipping over the library. If a GEMDOS program is going to terminate, which may happen either intentionally by calling Pterm(retcode) from the program (exit() or finishing main() both result in a call to Pterm() finally) or unintentionally (prior or during a call to a GEMDOS input/output function CTRL-C has been pressed), a exception routine evt_term is called within GEMDOS. This routine may be used to avoid termination of the program. evt_term is the vector $102 and the routine executed by a call to evt_term may be changed by the use of the XBios routine Setexc(): void (*pfv_old)(); extern void ctlc(); main() { pfv_old = Setexc(0x102,ctlc); /* program */ Setexc(0x102,pfv_old); } ctlc may be the following routine, which needs to be written in assembler, as manipulation of the stack pointer is necessary: ---cut here------cut here------cut here------cut here------cut here------cut here--- * CTRLC.S * * If ctlc is installed (by the use of Setexc()) as vector $102, programs * are not longer terminated by pressing CTRL-C during output. In fact * every call to Pterm(retcode) either from the active process or from * GEMDOS will return without terminating the process. Therefore it * is essential to remove ctlc from vector $102 if the process is * going to finish (if your library has it, you may use atexit() for this * purpose). * * WARNING: this hack is critical. It has been implemented on the basis * of intimate knowledge of GEMDOS internals. Only for interactive programs like editors or spreadsheets or the like you should use either this routine or BIOS I/O as recommended by other authors. The backlight is too low and the screen has a really bad ghosting problem. Also there is a big problem with hatching on the screen when diplaying large dark areas. The trackball is O.K., but sticks now and then, and the buttons are in a very inconvenient place, making the ball thumb oriented, not index finger based, which is difficult to controll, as well as bad for your hand. The keyboard is O.K., but the numberpad and functionkeys are too small, which is unacceptable when you see all the extra space on the keyboard. It weighs over 15 pounds, which makes it as a real pain in the ass to transport. THERE IS NO INTERNAL BATTERY, AND NO FACILITIES TO INCORPORATE ONE. TOTALLY UNACCEPTALBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The case design is shoddy, and some of the things that are touted as features are really just a pain in the ass, such as the port cover on the back. It is supposed to operate as a stand when open, but always slams shut while you are typing, and everyone I know who has one has just taken it off entirely. No blitter, not even a socket. Well, my suggestion is to skiop the STacy and the Mac luggable, and go with the ST Book, or the new Mac PowerBook, which will be out in October.
