In other words, if my hard >disk has 678K free, is there some way to make that 678K worth >of space totally free of any info whatsoever? Why do you want to do this? For security purposes? The easiest way is to write a program that opens a file and keeps writing some filler character to it (say, 0xe5) until the partition fills up. This will cause every sector on the disk to be used, except for those that are marked in the FAT as "bad" or "in-use" (and except also for a few at the end of the partition that, because of a bug in Gemdos, are never used). Then close the file and delete it. To make this reasonably efficient, you should set up a large buffer in memory, fill it with the filler character, and then write out the whole buffer at once. I can think of one possible problem with this approach. Sometimes a disk becomes corrupted and contains blocks that are marked "in-use" in the FAT but are not a part of any current files. (This will happen, for example, if a directory entry gets clobbered.) The above procedure would not erase those blocks. You would first need to use a disk analyzer to locate and free them. If you are dealing with really sensitive data, just writing over it might not be enough. I am told that sometimes the old data can be recovered off of magnetic media by use of special equipment, since writing the new data does not completely obliterate the old. (This is a bit like erasing something written in pencil and then writing something new on top. A faint shadow of the original writing remains.) Maybe the Double Click people would be interested in producing such a program in the "program-of-the-week" series. ================================================== | Michael Fischer | ================================================== -- ================================================== | Michael Fischer | ================================================== ------------------------------ Date: 7 Aug 91 10:07:57 GMT From: mcsun!corton!laas!ralph@uunet.uu.net (Ralph P. Since it uses only legal system calls Atari cannot blame bad software. Just run the programme on a MEGA STE and watch what happens to the display. If the shifter is one of the bad ones then most of the time the displayed area on the screen will shift a varying amount to the left of normal (equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 character positions). Run the programme repeatedly and if the screen jumps about as described then your machine is broken, if not then it's O.K. I have included a UUD'ed version for those who don't have an assembler.
