I am using Video Key and am impressed with it. I discovered that I rarely used my color monitor, except for playing games which is occasional. Therefore, I sold my color monitor, using onl my NEC GS2A for monochrome work. VideoKey gives great color, with only a few dithering and color bleed events--certainly not enough to hurt game playing. What will irritate you is the poor resolution of your color tv. You may have to squint your eyes a bit to read what used to be clear on your RGB. VideoKey is increasingly difficult to find, though, since Practical Solutions called it quits. I'd put out a call for a used one or check the mail order places. I have seen the VideoKey going used for $35.00. It retails out for about $85.00. Good luck! Larry Rymal |>Atari ST Users of East Texas<| Stephen F. Really nice, isn`t it. That`s what I thought, until I tested it under mgr. It didn`t work. Then just pure MiNT with the simple shell. It didn`t work too! It just doesn`t do anything. doesn`t build up a screen nor accept any keystrokes (that`s what it did in mgr too). Who could tell me that this isn`t true (or tell me, how to do it better)? My second question is: why does elvis doesn`t do well on german keyboards? The umlauts work fine, but []{}\@ get unreachable, until I remap them, so the umlauts get a problem. And finally the []\ keys are unable to recognize both alt and shift key, so that remapping []{} to the original alt-shift sequences is also impossible. For the upgrade price you only get a few manual pages with the Matrix commands documented. It does include both the interpreter and the compiler. >There is also an offer for an MS-DOS version. They claim that programs >are portable, but I don't know what that means exactly. The MS-DOS version (which I also received) is an expanded version of the ST version. Since both versions allow rather low level messing with their hosts, there is no real way to insure that programs are universal across all machines. But if you stick to the higher level type commands (including the higher level graphical interfaces) you should be able to write code that is mostly transportable. The MS-DOS version (versions actually) comes on four disks. There is the one for chips up to the 286 and one for chips up to the 486. They also have versions which incorporate the co-processor chips in both of the above versions -- four variations, one per disk. There are two manuals, one is a command reference and one is a user's manual. The compiler will be shipped to all purchasers when it is complete. In the meantime, they again provide the run-only version for distribution to anyone. Since they now bundle the compiler with the interpreter in the ST version, they have dropped the ST run-only version. They claim to be working on a Unix version. I will buy that when it comes out, too. -- - John Logajan @ Network Systems; 7600 Boone Ave; Brooklyn Park, MN 55428 - logajan@ns.network.com, 612-424-4888, Fax 612-424-2853 ------------------------------ Date: 18 Jul 91 11:59:30 GMT From: noao!asuvax!ukma!rex!samsung!know!daemon@arizona.edu Subject: info wanted To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu Two questions: First, is there any way to connect a Star Gemini Printer (with a Commodore 64 interface) to an Atari ST? To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu I had been following the Calamus vs. Pagestream flamefest with interest, because I thought this might be what I was after. After trying Pagestream out, I don't think so ( even ignoring the fact that it, version 1.8, crashed twice within an hour ). Here are the constraints 1) PostScript output 2) Some graphics/layout ability; i.e. need to import diagrams. 3) Usable as a word processor Now Pagestream ( or a more stable version thereof ) would fulfill items one and two easily, but I don't think I could stand to watch the line I'm typing flicker for long periods of time. Essentially what I'm looking for is a high end word processor, I don't need to flow text around graphics or fancy stuff. It doesn't seem to me that Wordperfect has the wherewithal. A couple of options already considered and rejected: 1) LaTeX; I don't mind it, but S.O. hates it. Is there a colour dvi previewer? 2) Spectre; this seems expensive, especially with buying a monochrome monitor. Any suggestions? Its brevity of features has given us something that other computers really are not keen on, or at least, as successful as the ST's implimentation: alternate desktops. What I think is so incredibly slick about the Atari ST is that the user can choose whatever desktop that he wants. He can get it enhanced via PD/FreeWare/ShareWare utilities, including Gemini, or he can really blow it high with HotWire or NeoDesk. And the really neat thing is that none of these shells cause the ST to bog down or run slowly, as other systems do (Windows). Count your blessings. We've got a very fast system here, even when running at 8mhz. I have had more than one "outsider" to remark on the speed of the ST. Is GEM lacking in things? Sure, it is. But look what it has given us as a result. I'd bet that DoubleClick and Codehead would not have nearly as as many neat utilities that they have been so graciously giving us, if the GEM desktop was locked (as the Mac desktop), or loaded with "features". I love it. Larry Rymal |>Atari ST Users of East Texas<| Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas ------------------------------ End of Info-Atari16 Digest ******************************
