Believe it or not, they ARE effective (when a reasonable number of people write); and this is one of the most important issues I've seen in the ST world. WORDPERFECT FOR ATARI Z*Net announced weeks ago that WordPerfect was going to end its Atari support after a cancellation of a major order by Atari Germany. The story continues to develop. The German order was for version 5.1 of WordPerfect, which is not yet completed and may now never be. WordPerfect programmers had prepared the code and had grafted major parts of the NeXT computer version of 5.1 into what was to be the Atari version. Full FSM GDOS management and compatibility was also integrated, making the Atari WordPerfect 5.1 perhaps the most advanced version that would have been available on any platform. However, after Atari Germany canceled their advance order of 10-15,000 units under pressure of German developers, WP contacted Atari in Sunnyvale. Reports vary somewhat, but the result of that talk seems to be that Atari Corp will not at this time back WordPerfect by assuring a minimum order. WP has left the matter open-ended, and does plan to continue the periodic bug-fixes and minor tweaks of the 4.1 version that is available for the Atari. Some Atari officials are working to reverse the situation and persuade all parties to take whatever measures needed to assure production of WordPerfect 5.1 for the Atari. Ataris' developer man, Bill Rehbock, has asked Z*Net to clarify what he is looking for in support for a new revision of WordPerfect. The company is hesitant to release version 5-point-something because of fears of insufficient sales. Bill has been actively soliciting reports from users as to their actual reasons for buying/ not buying WordPerfect to date, including bug reports. So far, Bill tells Z*Net that his mail has been primarily negative, bashing him and Atari for flubbing the WP deal. What he NEEDS are letters to take with him to WordPerfect in July. Those letters should say what YOU think about WordPerfect, both in the current incarnation for the Atari and what would make you buy a new version. Reasons you didn't buy the existing version are important too. Atari Corp, Bill Rehbock, 1196 Borregas Blvd, Sunnyvale, CA 94088. We had a really great one last year where we all said it'd be really nice to have a family tree as a keepsake, but no-ones jumped on it yet. I'd like to have a try at in, only if I can find a geneology program for the ST. PD or commercial. Have found lots of PD stuff for the PC, but I don't think I really want to depend on PC Ditto (soft version) for any serious work. Anybody? -- Patrick B. OK, GEM does have its problems, but most are only limitations, not the sort of thing that prevents a user/programmer from doing exactly what they want. Take the DC team, for instance. The fact that they produce so many excellent patches proves two things; firstly, that GEM is far from perfect, but secondly that the whole operating system is so wonderfully open that such enhancements are possible. GEM's problem stems from it's lack of updates (Atari's fault), the quality of code produces by the compiler, and the running speed. It is basically a good base for most applications. I am a great UNIX/X-Windows fan, and would very much like to get this for my TT (to be delivered in 2 weeks), but I would never advocate the replacement of a GUI that has served me so well since I bought the machine as a complete novice, to now as an almost quailified System Programmer. I have the pick of about 10 OSs to program under for my dissertation, and have chosen GEM on the TT for it's open-ness. TOS and GEM in ROM are here to stay, at least as long as the ST(E)/TT machines are popular, and I for one am still happy with the situation. What I would like is for Atari to allow certain parties to have copies of the source for the purposes of enhancing and extending (as well as shrinking) and accelerating it). For example, with the structure of GEM as it stands, it should be possible to tell obedient GEM programs that they are running entirely within one window, and to rewrite a small part of GEM (the rectangle list producer and menu handler) to cope with this (like MiltiGEM?), but without the source, I am unable to try this out. Such enhancements as this could only benefit two parties. Atari, and the end user - Atari because their product would be improved, and the user because then they could have a choice of ROMs (As long as the issue of compatibility is faced). So, Atari, Lets have a system whereby *I* can get the source code for the OS, and I only have to sign some document that binds me to any rules you may feel necessary. Comments Alan Pratt??? We have posted _all_ of them to comp.binaries, but alas, they have not gone thru. We have decided to post them here, since we can apparently pump out the programs faster than the moderator can review them... If this is a bad idea, flame me, and we'll stop, but we've received _many_ requests, and frankly, we don't know what the scoop is on comp.binaries... This week's program will copy a file that has a bad sector(s) somewhere in the file. This archive includes docs and the program. 100% assembly. To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu I'm a bit confused regarding the different formats available for archiving files e.g. arc, lharc, zoo etc. Is any one of these formats more efficient or reliable than the others, if so does this not make the others somewhat redundant? Is there any compatibility between the different formats? In other words which format should I be using to archive my files?
