I have one for emacs (called detex.el) that I can mail to anyone interested. It should also be avaible on major emacs-lisp ftp-sites. I haven't tried it though, so I don't know how good it is. It's really the best machine Atari has made so it would be terrible not to have it in perfect condition :-) Errors on DMA-sound and video on MEGA STE - HOW WE FIXED IT ! """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Here's a summary of what we found at service in Norway. First - the errors on both machines we discovered were: - Static/noise on DMA sound and MIXed standard ST sound. - Sync-problems when using Spectrum512 pictures (vertical bars). - Vertical flickering bars on monochrome (most at 8 MHz). - Right edge of monochrome screen "flips" over to left edge when changing screen adress/resolution in mono-mode. We tried to find a chip that could be the cause of all these problems and found a big VLSI chip partly hidden under the right edge of the VME-card holder. It's chip U502 on my MEGA STE and is called GSTSHIFTER on the print-layout. After looking at the print-layout on both MEGA STE and standard STE we found the same chip on standard STE, a combined sound/video chip but with a totally different part-number. Anyway, we removed the original MEGA STE chip (made in 1990) and replaced in with the STE chip (from 1989) and all the problems were gone. If you want to "steal" a chip from a standard STE it's chip U401 inside the STE (still GSTSHIFTER). Disclaimer: Even though this solved the problems for us it might not work for all MEGA STE's and you do this at your own risk (I still would like Atari Corp to give some official information on this. It's not "ONLY YOUR MACHINE" anymore. It's quite a few...) So what follows is a describtion of how to play samples through the MV16 sound cartridge,which gives 16-channels of mono 8-bit sound! ---------------------------- The first thing that must be understood is that,because the MV16 plugs into the cartridge port then it is not possible to write data directly to it along the data bus.This is due to the MMU or GLUE,which has this area $FA0000 to $FBFFFF marked as read-only.So what is needed is to find the way in which the volume and channel data is passed to the cartridge. Now as Dave,rightly pointed out,this is simply done by using the address lines. So to send some data to the cartridge port,you simply place the data as the lower 1->15 bits of an address in the range $FA0000 to $FBFFFF and then when you read this address,those lines are setup correctly. NOTE:- That the cartridge port is Word addressed and so even though the address may be described as bits 0->23,the zero bit is not used in the cartridge port ,so that even addresses are always used! And the higher bit`s describe the cartridge port area of 128k at $FA0000.So this gives us the bits 1->15 thru the cartridge port. Now all that was needed was to work out which of the bits 1->15 did what,with a MV16 plugged in.To do this,I sat down with my trustly electronics/computer reference books,a ST and a disassembled MV16 and se about some reverse engineering! I belive that it replaces chmelion.acc completely. I have recovered it from the public "Atari Magazine" BBS (run by Atari France). It was a self-extracting version. Atari Magazine claimed that it would work on plain STs and STes. I am here to state that it does work on both. I have also included maccel3.prg and a few MegaSTe *.cpx files since they also work on STs and STes (depending upon the capacity of the machine).
