Subject: Desk accessory blues (re-post with corrections!) To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu Sorry folks - my previous posting got munged. Here is it again: I use DESKMG33 to allow me to select the required combination of auto progs, accs, desktop.inf and assign.sys. It works fine. But I downloaded OKAMI from Stuttgart, Deutschland (I think) and tried to run it without reading the docs carefully (my German isn't too good!). It comes with a prog called GEM.PRG, supposed to give access to *.accs from the shell. When I ran it, the menu bar didn't show any accs, and the system froze. I had to reboot (from h/disk). But it went into a non-terminating loop of auto folder programs load and reboot. If I selected a setup without accs, from DESKMGR when it loaded from auto, all was well. But any setup with accs went into the lousy loop. I thought at first that idle.acc was the culprit, so i dragged it to trash - and all my files on h/d C: disappeared. When I reopened the C icon, they reappeared! Weird! Should I trash all my accs from the h/disk and recopy them from backup? Or will this risk munging the disk? Do I have a virus? If so, how can I kill it? ****************************************************************************** || Marshall Harris Internet/CSnet: marshall@cs.uq.oz.au || Dept.of Computer Science JANET: marshall%cs.uq.oz.au@uk.ac.ukc || University of Queensland EAN: marshall@cs.uq.oz.au || St Lucia, Queensland 4072 Bitnet:marshall%cs.uq.oz.au@uunet.uu.net || Australia UUCP: uunet!munnari!cs.uq.oz.au!marshall || ph: +61 7 365 2908 JUNET: marshall@cs.uq.oz.au || ****************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: 15 Apr 91 15:32:23 GMT From: noao!asuvax!cs.utexas.edu!swrinde!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!think.com!spool.mu. edu!munnari.oz.au!brolga!bunyip.cc.uq.oz.au!qut.edu.au!lunnon@arizona.edu Subject: German to english trashlator To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu Um, I'll keep this short, There was some discussion about a German to english text converter recently, can anybody remember the name and location of this program BOB R.Lunnon@qut.edu.au ------------------------------ Date: 15 Apr 91 06:37:13 GMT From: noao!asuvax!cs.utexas.edu!usc!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!caen!ox.com!math.fu-ber lin.de!tmpmbx!netmbx!perstoro@arizona.edu (Wilhelm Schaefer) Subject: GIF to SPC convertors - *overscan* To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu Mick_Schmidt@hb.maus.de (Mick Schmidt) writes: >Hmm, I've tried BGIF but only in 16 Colours Mode, because my Machine has an >16Mhz Acceleration Board which won't work together with Spectre Pics. BUT, apparently, a dedicated user of their materials, has taken it over. REGENT BASE is really good in many ways. One of the best ways was in the fantastic user support given by Frank Cohen; such support was important because the documentation was poor. (To give an idea as to the wonderful support Frank gave, I was a problem I could not solve; he had me send him my application; he found a bug in Regent Base itself, made the correction, and sent me the corrected version! Can't be beat!) The other problem was speed. BUT, once you know what you are doing, it is pretty nice. Again, the learning curve, at least for me, was steep. ------------------------------ Date: 15 Apr 91 16:02:05 GMT From: noao!ncar!elroy.jpl.nasa.gov!usc!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!pacific.mps.ohio-sta te.edu!linac!mp.cs.niu.edu!ux1.cso.uiuc.edu!timothyg@arizona.edu (Timothy Gallivan) Subject: Help with MiNT/MGR - I'm confused!! I too would like some help getting MiNT/MGR to operate properly. If anyone has some info, would you please post it. I'm sure there are many with these problems. I also had the 'pty' problem. Apparently MGR is looking for the SHELL environment variable to figure out which shell to run. If SHELL is not defined or points to the wrong thing, you get the 'pty' message. I first 'setenv SHELL ...' and then run MGR and it works ... sort of. I had MANY, MANY other problems with these programs. They may be related to the fact that I am running TOS 1.0 (520ST with 4M memory). 1) MiNT will not install by itself, especially from an auto folder. Most of the time it crashes because it can't install the proper cookie (or something like that). I wrote a little TSR to install the cookie and I can get MiNT up after that, but it is a major pain. Sometimes MiNT crashes on startup because, it says, something is trying to kill it. Sounds paranoid to me. 2) After I finally get MiNT running, I run a shell (GULAM) and set the HOME, and SHELL environment variables, then run MGR from the shell. Mgr starts up, but does not execute the commands in mgr.rc, which is in the HOME directory. When I create a new window, it starts up a bash shell, but everything is very unstable. The system crashes if I try to open another window, or give just about any command besides 'cd' or 'ls'. After I open a window, I can see the cursor blinking over on the left side of the screen. 3) As an aside, what is supposed to be the default bash startup file on the ST? I can't create '.bashrc' on the ST, and bash.rc and other obvious guesses don't work either. I (and apparently others) would greatly appreciate some help from someone who has this stuff working. It looks like wonderful software, if it would only work. Sorry for such a long message. When I did this, some of my midi programs are slowing down there output to my midi instruments. I think that only midi programs, that are using atari's midi out TOS call (as i remember it Midiws() ), are slowing down there output. Is this because there are some additional functions added by GDOS/ AMCGDOS and the ST must search into a table to lookup some routines, also the ones in the ROMS? If this is the clue, why can't GDOS bypass the default routines ,which are normally in ROM, immediately and uses the GDOS functions afterward? It seems to me that GDOS first looks if there is a GDOS function called and then passes to the default ROM functions if a not GDOS call is called. Is there a GDOS version available, which hasn't this problem? Any suggestions out there? Thanks in advance. Geert. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geert W.T.
