[OnlinePhile]

The lastest from the world of Comms and the Internet
with Jonathan Nott

Finally, we see the arrival of the regular telecommunations news round-up in AtariPhile. It was promised in the first issue, but a lack of both time and disk space meant it never saw the light of day in issue two either. Now I have stepped in to produce this column with some kind of regularity.

Atari Article Archive (A3)

A new Web site has been launched by ex STF Technical Editor Frank Charlton in order to preverse many of the great articles that he and the others have written over the years.

Currently, there are articles by Frank himself, Mac Marsden and Andy Curtis included, but hopes are that other past STF writers will submit some of their work for inclusion.

The site isn't simply for STF articles, so if you have written for another Atari publication in the past, get in touch with Frank at frank@support.tachyon.co.uk.

Shareware Support on NeST

The N.SUP.ATARI_WORLD echo on the popular NeST (Network ST) BBS Network was closed soon after the demise of the magazine. One of the uses that the echo aquired during its existance was to support the UK's Atari sharware schemes.

Recently, Daron Brewood (NeST's Coordinator) proposed the launch of a new echo, specificly for shareware support schemes. Votes were cast recently for N.SUP.ASSI, and out of the 15 or so nodes that voted, only one was against the proposed echo. N.SUP.ASSI has now been opened, and is available from any NeST BBS. 42BBS (on 01256-895106) has access to the NeST network and is also the online home of the FFF and AtariPhile.

Titan Designs Web Site

Titan's brilliantly presented Web site is now online. They have dedicated sections for Titan, BSS and Gribnif products, with quality illustrations and well-written HTML. They have also included a page of links to other established Atari Web sites, showing how loyal Titan are to the Atari community as a whole.

Support on 42BBS

42BBS, the online home of the FFF, has recently expanded its support for organisations like InterActive and WSAUG. The support area now allows you to download relevant files and leave messages for organisers where possible. A handy feature on the InterActive menu is the GSZRZ updater shell for registered users, and you can always download the latest version of the Support file. Two new inclusions are a support menu for Falcon group Reservoir Gods and a file area for productions released at the recent Symposium '96 convention in Germany.

The ANL Story

Just six months ago, I started compiling a list of Atari related Web sites which I had heard about of visited. It only contained about five or six entries, and just sat around waiting to be expanded on. When I got my first ever copy of CAB (pre-v1.0), I converted this list into HTML format (a simple list), and later added a short description to each.

A while later I started to feel that having an index such as this on the Web would be useful to many Atarians. I approached Martin Stacey, who argeed to host my (now named) 'Atari Net Locator' page on his site. To give the pages some body, I prepared some graphics and asked Joe Connor if we liked the idea of an InterActive support page. The first update of the Atari Net Locator (ANL) when online in April 1996.

Since then the site has been updated monthly. The June update saw a complete re-vamp and even more pages have been added to the site since. My rather poor HTML coding at the start has developed thanks to Neil Randall's 'Using HTML' book. ANL now has many registered users and has been awarded ST Format's 'Web Site Award' in STF 86.

Ad-Lib BBS moves home

Frank Charlton has taken on the position of SysOp for Ad-Lib the former home of ST Format. Frank has many plans for the BBS and wants to build on it the excellent services already offered. Andy Curtis will still be playing a prominent part in the running of the BBS and we can still expect to see him messaging in the networks.

The new number for Ad-Lib is 0191 422 9495
