Due to a variety of circumstances, the program was never finished, though it had progressed to beta testing. I have decided to release Storm as shareware. I realize that there are companies out there that would be happy to publish it commercially, but I have a full-time job and it would take too long to completely finish the program and manual. Mike Vederman has been kind enough to permit me to release the program as shareware and also to allow me to use the Storm name and logo. Mike and I are still on very good terms. The program is fully functional, except for a few minor features. Current documentation consists of a couple of text files, one on the Basic, one on the program itself. I have not disabled any features for the shareware version and there are no annoying messages nagging users about shareware registration. I will be distributing the final beta test version to beta testers shortly. Once it has been tested, the shareware package will be released. I hope this will be in a week or two. I have had access to a Falcon, so the program is definitely Falcon compatible, as well as MultiTOS, and TT compatible. It has been tried out on a variety of video cards, including full-color TT video cards and appears to work with all of them. The suggested shareware fee will be $25. That is either Canadian or U.S. $. (This is to encourage U.S. registrants to purchase Canadian money orders.) Shareware registrants will receive printed documentation and an enhanced version of the program in the first quarter of 1994. While I will attempt to fix any serious bugs in the unregistered version, I will not be adding any new features to it. I will be adding features to the registered shareware version and writing improved documentation for it. I will be supporting Storm on both CompuServe and Genie. I do not wish to become involved in any of the battles that occasionally erupt between users of the various online services. I will upload the software to both services on the same day, and it will be up to the sysops when it will become available for download. - Alan Page All beta testers are released from non-disclosure regarding Storm features, though I hope they will check out the final beta version (available in a day or so) before commenting, because there have been a number of changes and fixes. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 2 Mon Nov 15, 1993 K.ESTES [Kenne@SFRT] at 13:42 EST Are all the paths set to valid sources and destinations? Please download it (when available) and try it out. These things are hard to figure out, but I found a section of code that runs in the vertical blank that was allocating stack space for some arrays. It was only about 80 bytes, but perhaps that was enough to blow away the supervisor stack, especially if the interrupt happened when the machine was already in supervisor mode running code that also used a lot of supervisor stack. I have changed the arrays to static. Also, the zmodem no longer gives me the 'read errors' it used to. However, sometimes it will not terminate a Zmodem upload properly and you have to abort it. I am still trying to work that one out. Re: people changing the program flags. If you do so, please restore them before running a patch on the program. If you are running under MultiTOS with memory protection, you MUST leave the SUPER flag set, or else the dialer and the file transfer are guaranteed to cause memory protection errors! I will be looking at the dialer for the same problem in the next few days. - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 9 Tue Nov 16, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 01:51 EST Alan, Something wrong is going on. The program is 2-bombing on me when I do something like this. Everytime I select the "open new" on the file menu, it bombs and sends me back to gem, and I have to reset the computer after that. It happens everytime I click on that new file selection. This appears to be consistent on my mega 2 machine with TOS 1.4 and using version 1.1. Has anyone else experienced this? This appears to be a major bug to me. Everything else runs fine as long as I don't touch that new file drop menu selection. Also when I am dialing a number using the Dial menu, I choose the line and dial. After I do this, I can hear the clicking of the keys as if someone were holding the keys down. I touch the space bar or any key and it stops the clicking sound. If I remember correctly, I think I did not experience problems like this on version 1.0. When reoprting bugs, you really need to give more information about your system and its setup. First tip, as always, is to try Storm on a 'stripped' system with no programs running from your AUTO folder and no ACCessories loaded. If that solves the problem, try adding back the programs and ACC's one at a time until you find the conflicting program(s). Of course, you may know this routine already, but I see it so many times around here that it can never be reiterated too many times. :) Good luck getting it worked out. With a little more work, Alan should have Storm up to the "term program of choice" for many of us! - Mick ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 13 Tue Nov 16, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:28 EST Pat, Thanks for the info on Mother Hubbard's Cupboard. As mentioned above, either change Blink=0 to Blink=1 anywhere you find it in STORM.INI, or delete any lines with Blink=0 (has the same effect since blink defaults to ON). U.S. checks or postal money orders are okay. My bank puts a hold on U.S. checks for four weeks, but that seems only fair since I won't be shipping the shareware version until next January. I am able to get in the program and do everything in the program as I need to. When I click on the Open file and Open new file at any time, it gives me two bombs and I have to reset the machine. I have 6 accessories named, ButtonFixer, Popit, Maxifile, Printer Initilization, Control Panel, and Warp 9. I am going to try running 1.0 and see if it happens to me or not. If so, I will run on a bare systems mode and see what happens and go from there. None of the other programs I have have a problem, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Be back later... Gary ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 19 Tue Nov 16, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 22:21 EST Alan, I took out all the auto programs and all the ACC's and still had the same problem. When I click on the Open File or Open New File in the File Menu, bombs instantly to GEM. I ran the 1.00 version and no problem at all even with all my accessories and auto programs. So, there is something happening. I don't know what else to tell ya, except apparently, something changed in the new 1.1 version to cause this. My machine is the Mega 2. What I will do is avoid selecting those and perhaps test them again in the future with version 1.3. Doing the patch showed a successful patch, etc. Another irony is that when dialing, it sometimes starks making a clicking sound at a fast rate as if someone were holding down the keyboard keys. If that happens, I hit the space bar or any key and it stops. That's just when dialing. Everything else seems to work fine, including the downloads. So...what else do you want me to try? I don't know what else to try since I tried with the barebones system. I'm not upset, but pointing this out so you know about it. I do wonder though if I am the only one experiencing this or not? Is anyone using version 1.1 and trying that Open file and Open New file selection on version 1.1? If not, could those of you give it a try if you haven't already done so. Version 1.0 worked fine opening both of those selections. Hear from any of you later. I tried Storm 1.01 with the old STORM.RSC file and got exactly the problem you described. There was a STORMRSC.ZZP in the patch kit which you need to use to patch the resource file. David, Assuming Nathan hasn't loaned it out, I should be able to get another look at his Falcon next week and report back to you. One more thing to try on the serial configuration is to place the following line in the [Serial Ports] section: UseBconmap=0 Let me know if that helps. If not, then I will get back to you when I get access to a Falcon again. I did borrow it for a week and it seemed to be working fine, but it may have a different ROM version. In fact, I believe it is an early model (has a German keyboard). I have a program that reports info on the serial port vectors and such. When I have a chance to clean it up a bit I will upload it. That may help obtain more information. Until then, there's not much more I can do but offer my apologies that the program has failed to work on your system. - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 23 Tue Nov 16, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 23:53 EST Gary, open file and open new work fine on my Falcon with Storm 1.01. The reason it had never surfaced for me before was that it doesn't seem to do this if I'm not online. I was just on a local BBS, and when I tried it, bomb city (2 of 'em). I got a "Unable to open a window" dialog. Time to take my own advice and strip the system and try it again. Will report back later... LATER: Ok... just did some checking with a stripped system and got the same problem. It happens when selecting either "Open" or "Open New". I now believe it has something to do with the patch to ver. 1.01, as I don't recall this ever happening before I ran the patch on it. The only thing running on my system (MSTE/4) at the time was ICD's boot software, version 5.3.0 I believe. Running in high-res BTW. I have to agree that this could be considered a major bug, and I hope that Alan can look into getting it taken care of soon! As it stands now, I can't see myself paying the Shareware fee until some of these bugs are squashed. Once they are though, I'll happily pay up!! It has the potential to be my term program of choice once it's running smoothly. Don't get me wrong folks, I do appreciate Alan making this program available as Shareware and all of the support he is giving it in the little free time he has. At least one person reported (with an earlier version of the software) that all file transfer problems disappeared when he booted from floppy with no hard disk driver. I've also been finding and tracking down some minor bugs and fixing some areas that people have been complaining about (like terminal preferences resetting cursor location). I had one email (on another network) from a Falcon user who was able to do file transfers. I have sent him email to ask about his rom version and HD software. J.ANTHONY, Didn't think of that being a problem. I will definitely check that out and make sure that there is room for at least 128 characters of directory+filename. R.HOEKSTRA1, Are you running at 8-bits, no parity, or is parity enabled? G.ROUSH, To upload and retain the blank lines, you need to set the "Expand Blank Lines" in the Ascii file transfer configuration. Otherwise Genie will strip out empty lines. What that does is add a space to otherwise blank lines. Genie is not the only system with that quirk. Storm word-wrap leaves blank spaces at the end of lines that are wrapped to the next line. Genie doesn't handle that nicely, so I strip out trailing spaces when uploadin with Ascii. That's why the spaces you added got removed. Perhaps I should not zap trailing spaces if that's all there is on a line? In any case, "Expand Blank lines" will put them back for you. As a side benefit, you won't have to add them manually! - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 41 Thu Nov 18, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 03:55 EST Alan Just read your message while sending mine at the same time. So thanks for the answer to this. ya hear that guys! What good support we are getting. Thanks again. Gary ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 42 Thu Nov 18, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 04:08 EST Alan, I want to mention I had no problem uploading to GEnie the last message and this one. It uploaded it instantly and I hit CNTL-C to break when it was done and saved it. I use the SUPRA Modem 2400. The settings in GEnie must be ASCII 3. If you can't get the CNTL-C to work for you while in GEnie, type SET at any command line and look at option 3. If the Control break key is not 3, then CNTL-C will not get GEnie's attention. I also felt I should say again to what happened to my bombs and what I did to stop them. Someone in another message had the same problem and told me to delete the file. I didn't delete the file but just renamed it to STORM.INX and ran STORM 1.1 without it. No bombs when opening the file or opening a new one. Hmmm...interesting! I decided to pull in the INI file and see what was in it. I used the STORM editor and went to the end. I found another blink command that I had not seen previously and it was blink=0. I changed it to blink=1, saved the file as STORM.INI. I exited the STORM program and then went back in. I carefully went to try the open file and open new file and sure enough, that did it. No bombs! Not only that, I find the computer is acting much better when the blinks are set to 1. So thanks to the guys who helped me out on this. Deleting the file isn't necessary. For those who are having this problem, just go in that file and find those blinks and make sure they are 1 or just delete the lines that contain "blink=0". Alan, let us know when the fix is done for those blinks. And by the way, this is a super program you've done. I know other good things will eventually come, but for what this is on the first version, it's quite good! Two things I do have on my wish list for this program, 1) having a run program feature. 2) A feature that will let me turn the minutes clock on so I can tell how long I have been logged on to a BBS or to GEnie. I see the clock, but I need to know the number of minutes that have gone by. These two things I would like to see as an option. I sometimes play RSCARDS and would like to stay in STORM and run the programs and then get back to STORM when done. You know what I mean. Let me know if these features will come in future updates? Thanks. Gary There!! the ASCII upload is working now with the expanded blank lines for these messages. Thanks. Now what you see is a readable note. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 43 Thu Nov 18, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:20 EST Alan, TT030, 3.06, 4/4 RAM. ICD 6.x booter. In the Basic window, type HELP EXEC and HELP GEM. For programs with no command lines, use "" as the command line (may make that optional later on). GEM 0,FSEL$("",""),"" will let you pick a program to run using the file selector. Naturally, ill behaved programs are not guaranteed to work. Don't run external programs during file transfers. I haven't had a chance to put "Storm" through its paces by actual use (i.e. connecting to BBSs). However, I've run into a small problem with version 1.01 that wasn't present in version 1.00. Whenever the cursor in the Editor Mode is set to "non-blink" Storm crashes (with 2 bombs) whenever I try to load a file into the text editor. Here are the steps I take to create the crash: 1. Under the "File" menu bar selection, click on "Open" a ASCII text file. 2. Under "Settings" menu bar selection, click on "Editor" and, in the dialog box, set "Cursor blink" to OFF and click on OK. 3. Close editor window. 4. Under the "File" menu bar selection, click on "Open"... 5. 2-bomb crash back to desktop. AL - uptopic I mentioned that my dailing problems were due to usin PARITY with 8bit word. As far as I know this is a valid combination and the PARITY bit is taken from one of the stop bits. I.E. if you have PARITY on (even or odd) then you can only have 1 stop bit. If you have PARITY none then you can use 1 or 2 stop bits. BUT paity PARITY should not be limit to only 7bit words. Can you or anyone else confirm this? Also, if you don't support 8bit, even parity (for example) then this should produce an error msg not go crazy with the dialing right? I think of myself as a beta-tester for a fabulous new product. eric ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 55 Fri Nov 19, 1993 D.ALFONSO1 [D.ALFONSO] at 23:41 EST Hi, I've been trying out STORM and have done all the current patches (that I know of), but I'm having a problem keeping the information straight for the Dial menus. Everytime I change the name of the BASIC script for a particular BBS, it seems that I'm changing it for the BBS listed in the same position when I scroll to the next window of BBS's (10 names down the list) also. I haven't seen this reported before..is anyone else experiencing the same thing? David ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 56 Sun Nov 21, 1993 A.PAGE3 at 00:22 EST Regarding 8-bits and parity: I am just passing what you specify to the operating system. If the result is something that your modem can't handle, that's not my problem. In fact, in the next version I will probably disable 8- bits with parity, as it doesn't appear to be a usable setting. I will just disable parity if you select 8-bits. There is a bug in the dialing directory that sometimes causes a confusion between entries that start with the same (single) digit. That will be fixed in the next release/patch. It also causes the dialsort program to mess up and sometimes the Basic SET/SET$ mess up as well. When VT100 terminal emulation starts up, it redefines the cursor keys and keypad to VT100 usage. That may cause the exit dialog to show changed function keys. If you go into the dial directory editor and exit with OK, then the dial directory is set as 'changed' even if you didn't actually change any entries. - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 57 Sun Nov 21, 1993 A.PAGE3 at 01:10 EST More hints: If you can't get Storm to work with your Falcon serial port, try adding UseBconmap=0 to the [Serial Ports] section of STORM.INI. This is going to be the default for Falcons in the next version, as all the PortMap junk is really only required for machines with more than one serial port. For a screen dump, try this as a keyboard macro: FOR x = 1 to 24:LPRINT SCREEN$(x):NEXT x Substitute LOG for LPRINT to dump the terminal screen to the capture buffer. This is particularly useful for VT100, since the capture buffer can't always create a usable capture if the system you are connected to is jumping the cursor around the screen. Using the TIME$ and DATE$ functions from Storm Basic, it should be easy to add code to your logon to record the last time you logged on to a system. When the dialer connects, it puts an entry in the [Dialer] section indicating which entry was connected to. e.g. Connect=3 means DIALDIR.INI entry number 3 was dialed and got connected. - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 58 Sun Nov 21, 1993 D.STMARTIN [Binary Ink] at 07:02 EST Alan or anyone else for that matter!: I encountered an interesting problem yesterday while using STORM 1.01: It was my first attempt at using the Typeahead buffer in "chat" mode with a local BBS. Everytime I'd send the contents of the typeahead, it would transmit every OTHER charater (i.e.: "Aladdin" would become "Aadn"). I got consistent results with every attempt to send and finally had to abandon the typeahead. System: MegaST 4 w/ ICD AdSpeed @ 16 Mhz, Supra FAX Modem @ 14.4 Kb The problem appeared to be one of timing, but I may be wrong. Suggestions or solutions invited. Thanks! Clar ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 60 Wed Nov 24, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 21:10 EST Alan, I have been trying to use VT100 protocol to access my work on the IBM 3090 mainframe. I am able to connect and use it, but there is a problem. Everything I type is in insert mode. If there is something on the right of the cursor, it pushes it to the right and shouldn't do that. I have tried to find where the turn off insert mode command is, but was unable to do that. Also, when I use the left arrow, it would rubout the characters while going left when I simply just want to move the cursor over to a position. I had to stop using it. Any suggestions? I now use the Flash II VT100 protocol when accessing the IBM 3090. So...any comments on this would be helpful. There was one time when I was talking to someone in the 300 mode and the system seemed to slow down so when I was typing the keys, the characters were not showing up for about 3 seconds and the timing was that each character was taking three seconds to show up on the screen. It was odd to see that and I don't know what caused that to happen. I hung up and rebooted the computer and it was okay after that. Could that have been something to do with the serial ports? I had exited and everything was slow motion, which was why i rebooted. Other than what I have said, the program is running well and the downloads are working fine with zmodem. I have yet to try the other settings. I like your features. It is simple to run. Some features I would like to see that aren't on this program I already have mentioned to you earlier on my wish list. Maybe you can mention what is on your list that you are working on according to the wish lists from us who have mentioned what would be nice? If so, I am all ears. So far so good. Thanks. Gary ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 61 Thu Nov 25, 1993 A.PAGE3 at 01:31 EST Strange about VT100, as it is based more or less on the Flash code. Perhaps I made a typo somewhere? In any case, if you select "Emulations" from the "Settings" menu, then select VT100 and click on the Config in the Terminal Emulations dialog, you will see the VT100 configuration dialog. Insert mode is OFF by default. Also, in the main Terminal settings dialog, be sure that BS Erases is OFF as well. To force it out of terminal mode, try programming a function key as TYPE CHR$(27);"[?4l"; That will force it out of insert mode by sending the appropriate escape sequence to the VT100 emulation. Note 'l' is a lowercase L, not the digit one (1). Dunno about the strange slowdown. A number of new features have been completed for the next release. I am testing it now and doing the documentation. Among the new features and fixes: Fixed the cursor blink bug and added no-cursor-blink to the terminal. Mouse button was misbehaving with TOS 1.0 - fixed. Hangup is in the dial menu, and can be configured as a Basic command in the Modem setup menu. Zmodem changes - hopefully faster startup. All File transfers - would hang if full filename was longer than 39 characters - fixed. Dialer window can be moved and it stays there when you reactivate it. Copying text to the clipboard no longer appends an extra end of line. DATE$ and TIME$ commands in Basic can be customized. You will be able to have completely separate keyboard macros for the terminal and edit windows. (May require some manual editing of the STORMKEY.INI file to update the UseBasic setting.) New Basic command EDKEY (much like FKEY) added to handle this, as well as changes in the various dialogs. You will be able to choose whether the typeahead uses terminal or editor macros. Fixed bug in dialer that would confuse entry 10 with entry 1. This was a bug in the profile handling. Fixed bug in Basic SET command that would cause it to misbehave. Probably other changes that I can't remember right now. - Alan P.S. "force it out of Terminal Mode" - should be "Insert Mode" above. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 62 Thu Nov 25, 1993 G.ROUSH [Gary Roush] at 03:05 EST Alan, Thanks for the quick response and your list of hints that are forthcoming and the explanation on VT100 emulation. It works now without any problems. Thanks a million. I do have a question. Maybe it is a suggestion or already implemented, but I don't see it. When I use the VT100 emulation and I dial to the places with VT100, is there a option available connected with the phone number calling in the "DIAL Edit" drop down to tell STORM that I want capture off for this call without having to manually turn off capture during these sessions? Perhaps, what I am asking is that not only are there the 3 options when double clicking on the name to get the settings for that phone number, but maybe you could allow all the settings options to be available when double clicking on the phone number name? For some places, I want certain settings, and for others other settings. It would make a good enhancement, I think, unless it is already in there and I just haven't seen it. Keep up the good work! Al ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 77 Wed Dec 08, 1993 A.PAGE3 at 23:37 EST I have uploaded the patch to Storm 1.02, which should fix some of the problems people have been reporting. When I get a chance to rework the documentation, I will upload a full Storm 1.02 package as well. Unfortunately, to turn Capture off during a session you need to have CAPTURE OFF in the logon file. The patched protocols will no longer die with long pathnames. The pathname will be shortened until it fits in the available space by removing folder names from the start of the pathname. I have done further work on Zmodem and hope it will help those who were still having problems. In the VT100 setup dialog, ensure that "Keyboard Appl. Mode" button is not selected. That button should actually be labelled "Keypad Appl. Mode" (whoops). R.WHITTAM: Dunno what the problem was, but that code has been rewritten anyway so please check it out in the new version. In the new version you have separate keyboard macros for terminal and editor windows. This may initially cause some confusion. Please read the CHANGES.DOC and check all keyboard macros using the appropriate dialogs. If you have defined keyboard macros for Control-S, Control-R, etc for search and replace in the editor, you will have to revise them to conform with the new way of handling macros. Key= becomes EditKey=. UseBasic=1 becomes UseBasic=2. For long macros, be sure to set the word wrap to a large value before loading the STORMKEY.INI file into the editor else the long macros will get wrapped to the next line, which will not work properly! - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 78 Thu Dec 09, 1993 GRMEYER [Gordon/Sysop] at 20:39 EST Alan's patch to bring Storm to v1.02 is file #31031 in the library. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 79 Thu Dec 09, 1993 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 23:27 EST Alan, I have patched Storm to version 1.02 and while the program seems to be working fine, I still can not get ZMODEM to work. If memory serves me correctly, I did a ZModem batch upload with Storm ver 1.00, but when doing the batch upload with the ZMODEM.TRF properly patched to 1.01, then to 1.02, I type in *.LZH on the item selector, so as to upload all the files in that directory with the LZH extender. It uploads a file called _.LZH (yes, a single underline character), then quits the upload as if it were only a single upload. The _.LZH file is the same length as one of the *.LZH files in the directory, and I have not, as of yet, been able to confirm with the Sysop at the other end what actually arrived. This should be changed from "Waiting for connection". 4) Expand terminal window height to at least 48 lines. 5) The Dialer uses a window and should be available via the WINDOWS menu when open. I would hate to end this message without some praise as well. I would like to thank Alan for making this program available to us. I really like the BASIC and would like to see some more examples in the libraries. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 89 Sat Dec 11, 1993 NTACTONE [Ron Hunter] at 09:58 EST Gary, Sounds to me like you were using the wrong version of the RSC file... CTL-Q will stop a transmission and CTL-S will start it (or vice-versa), but you will still get everything. CTL-X will tell the host to abort a file send. CTL-C will dump you out of a lot of programs. ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 94 Wed Dec 15, 1993 A.PAGE3 at 21:06 EST I apologize for being absent for a while. I have been busy at work. Also, I managed to lose two email messages and I don't recall who sent them. I just replied to email today, so if you don't get a reply in the next day or two, please resend email. I do have a debug version of Zmodem, but it doesn't have a full set of debug messages yet. I will try to ensure that it has a full set for the end of transfer section then email it to a couple of people. It's too bad I don't have access to Unix RZ/SZ. Perhaps I should try to get the cheap Unix clone that Mark Williams Co. was selling dirt cheap? None of the file transfer modules support batch uploads, so it's not surprising that it doesn't work properly! The .TRF modules have no FASTBIT or other flags. I dunno why you would not be able to patch them. Please check the version numbers in the various setup dialogs. G.FUQUAY: Are you using VT100? With VT100, some systems send lots of cursor repositioning sequences that make the cursor jump all over the screen. In that case, it is not possible to create a useful capture buffer. It is better to copy text from the terminal screen. Sample keyboard macro: FOR x = 1 to 24:LOG SCREEN$(x):NEXT X This macro will dump the terminal screen to the capture buffer. It's useful for VT100 systems that don't send line feeds but use cursor positioning instead. Also, what are your Add Linefeeds settings in the Terminal Preferences dialog? To send BREAK, you need to program a Basic macro. e.g. in the Keyboard macros dialog, pick an ALT key and set it to the following: BREAK ON:PAUSE 1:BREAK OFF:END - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 95 Wed Dec 15, 1993 M.KELLING2 [Mark Kelling] at 23:59 EST Alan, I want to say thank you for Storm! It is the program I have been looking for since the last update to Flash (the original, not Flash 2). My system consists of a Mega 4 running ICD harddrive software and a pile of ACC, AUTO and patch programs and I have had absolutely no problems since I moved up to Storm version 1.02 this weekend. Only one problem popped up after the conversion: seems the STORM.INI file lost info about strip high bit settings from the dialer editor. A simple resaving of the INI file fixed the problem. One small anoyance I noticed. If I have a serial setup saved in an INI file for a BBS, Storm will revert to the saved setup when dialing that BBS even if I have changed the setting in the Edit Dial dialog. The only solution I have found is to make the changes and save them each time I need to switch (for example from 7E1 to 8N2 on the serial port). I use different settings depending on what I plan to do while online and what network I dial through. One other thing: Storm really does MultiTask even without MultiTOS! After reading the documentation about how Storm could multitask, I thought I would push it to see what it could do. During a B Protocal download, I used UIS III to format a floppy. Worked perfectly! The format went a little slower than usual, but the download streamed on. Then I used the Chameleon ACC loader to load and dump several ACCs. Each came up and ran, then unloaded successfully. I was majorly impressed! My shareware payment is on the way! One thing for those wanting to register in Canadien funds: your local US Post Office will sell you a money order in Canadian Dollars (for an extreemely reasonable fee) which can be cashed on the spot in Canada (no multi week wait!). One final compliment to Alan: for the first time since I have had an ST, Flash 1.6 has been erased from my hard disk. No other telecomm software _ever_ got me to do that. The previous versions worked just fine, but after the 1.02 patch, this problem started. Even though I select ZModem as the prefered protocol, configure it to auto start, and save it with the Save Preferences menu selection, Storm now forgets about that at download time. When I check the Transfer Protocol menu selection, it shows ASCII. I've saved and resaved the ZModem selection time and agian, and Storm just does not want to remember it. What am I doing wrong? I D/L'd your program a few weeks ago and subsequently patched it as your patches came out. I noticed that everything patched ok except the ZMODEM.TRF. It kept saying it was the wrong file. In your first patch (1.01), it never patched the ZMODEM.TRF, so in actuality it was the original ZMODEM.TRF (25610 Bytes). Now, if it is the original ZMODEM.TRF, why would the patch (1.02) say it was the wrong ZMODEM.TRF file? Just curious.... I've had NO PROBLEMS with STORM since DAY ONE. Keep up the good work and expect my payment shortly. Alan: Suggest you pick a naming standard for patches which has a STANDARD tag for each upgradable file plus an indicator of what version it upgrades to. For example, the patch mentioned above might be ZMODE101.ZZP and the successor would then be ZMODE102.ZZP. You'd have to come up with a variant for the RSC files, but there are only two of them (one for Storm and one for Patch). Maybe STRSC102.ZZP... When I am using the high speed capabilities of my modem (9600 and up) long ascii lists to screen get 'corrupted' after a while. I have been told that this is because of a flow control problem, and that I should set my software to hardware flow control (RTS/CTS). Flash 1.6 doesn't seem to support this. Anybody have any idea of how to fix this? Does Storm support this? I do have SERFIX2.PRG installed, so the serial port bug shouldn't be a problem. Charlie/sysop ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 115 Sun Jan 02, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 16:24 EST Devin, The successor to Flash is Flash II, which supports the Flash key commands and its DO language to a great extent. Storm is an application all its own, very interestingly done, but not related to Flash except for having the same parentage. RTS/CTS is not supported in Flash 1.6, but it is supplied by the Serial Fix CPX. When you set RTS/CTS in the CPX, you get it at the port. Al ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 116 Sun Jan 02, 1994 BALKCOM [Devin] at 21:58 EST I have just downloaded STORM. It seems to be a great program! However, I am having the same problem RandyH is having with Zmodem transers. I am using the UNIX sz program to send the file. I have not attempted an upload, but I would like to report that ANOTHER program has the same problem with Zmodem uploads as someone here has reported with STORM. The XYZ program (by Alan Hamilton - STARFALL) also occasionally stops uploading with 100% transferred, but then doesn't tell the other computer that it is finished. After attempting this a few times with XYZ, I had four garbage files in my directory (which I unfortunately have no way of deleting). This sounds very similar to what some people have reported with STORM. The way that Zmodem download fails in Storm is that it begins, gets the filename, and then get a succession of read errors. When I abort the transfer, there are a series of ^^X^X^X^X along the bottom of the screen, following a ^Z character. It seems that STORM is telling the other system "Ok, I'm ready", and then either not confirming this or aborting the transfer unintentionally. The other system probably aborts, and recieves the series of ^X's (do these signify a read error?). This seems to be a great program - I will send in my registration as soon as the Zmodem problems are fixed. -Devin ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 117 Mon Jan 03, 1994 B.PRANG at 21:46 EST I'm still not having any luck getting Storm genie.bas script to work at 9600.(Comp. also). See message #70 In reference to your problem with Flash 1.6. Flash 1.6 cannot keep up with reading text at speeds greater than 9600cps, even with Serfix installed. Serfix does lock RTS/CTS on so Flash cannot turn it off, which takes care of file transfers, but since Flash doesn't use flow control it can't keep up with the text. It will just mess things up. >> Joe M << ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 122 Wed Jan 05, 1994 ARCHIVIST [Charlie] at 14:50 EST B.Prang, if you're getting as far as the U#= prompt I think I know what's going on. An error reported at that point of 'improper format' would mean that GEnie is not receiving your user ID and password properly, most likely because Storm is sending them as soon as it sees the U#= but before GEnie is really ready for it. Try adding a pause of 1 second after the wait for 'U#=' part of the script and before sending your User ID etc. That will not hurt any on GEnie's end as many people type in their User ID even with autoscripts for security. Another thing to look at is the exact format that is being sent to GEnie. If there are any extra characters like quotes GEnie will say it's an improper format. To see either of these things live as they happen change the duplex to half. As I recall, the Storm script switches to full duplex before sending the User ID so that it isn't visible on the screen. Switch that just long enough to get this script working for you because I'll bet there's something funny being sent to the U#= prompt. Charlie/sysop ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 123 Thu Jan 06, 1994 BALKCOM [Devin] at 21:06 EST Bill, thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think that is the problem. Here is my reasoning: my path is "G:\DOWNLOAD\". This is not 30 characters. Does the 30-char limit apply to the remote system as well? The folder I am downloading from is about 5 levels deep. I have found two possible bugs (undocumented features?) that are a minor inconvenience (as opposed to the major ZMODEM one). The first is that when I select terminal type in the dial directory edit function, the terminal doesn't change in the little rectangle. When I select the rectangle again, the menu that pops up does indeed have VT100 with a check mark next to it or TTY or whatever I want to select. However the terminal type is still not set when I dial. I can still use the Settings... menu option to change this, however. The other bug is when I call up the dial directory and use the keyboard to move around. I can move the cursor up to the Dial line! Is this intentional? This screws up the screen display somehow. I have been quite busy at work. I will work on 9600 baud logons and see if I can post an improved version. Some of the bugs reported may be dependant on a particular version of GEM or auto- folder program, e.g. ones that only some people can reproduce. You MUST use some sort of flow control with high speed modems. Best bet is RTS/CTS with SERFX20 and be sure the modem has RTS/CTS enabled as well. Eyeball Bill, I am not sure what you mean by ASCII showing up on the transfer protocol selection when you want Zmodem. If Zmodem is set to autostart, then you do not need to select "Download" from the File menu at all. In the File Transfer setup dialog, "ASCII" is show highlighted simply because it is the first in the list. If you then configure Zmodem in that dialog, it remains highlighted during that session, but the program doesn't retain that preference for the next time you run the program, though I suppose I could add that as a minor feature. Similarly, when you select a protocol from the Download or Upload popup, that item will be checked the next time the popup menu appears during the current session, but not remembered for the next session. There is no fixed limit for capture buffer size in Storm, but I could imagine problems with MTOS if system memory is really low. - Alan ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 136 Fri Jan 14, 1994 BALKCOM [Devin] at 21:31 EST How do you make sure RTS/CTS is set on the modem? Frank ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 139 Tue Jan 18, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:19 EST RTS/CTS isn't related to ASCII or binary. RTS/CTS is necessary whenever the port speed and the modem rate are different. My Supra, for example, runs at 14.4 kbps, but my port setting is usually 38 kbps. Al ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 140 Tue Jan 18, 1994 BALKCOM [Devin] at 22:42 EST I have verified that RTS/CTS is not the problem. I do have the flow control set both with hardware and software. However, I have still encountered the following bugs (undocumented features?). 1. Zmodem does not work from my Internet server. It does seem to work fine with GEnie, however. I just get continual 'Read errors'. I am operating at 9600 baud (19.2k serial port setting on the net and 2400 baud (19.2k ser) on GEnie. 2. The dialer does not seem to recieve a 'CONNECT' message when logging on to anywhere with a baud rate higher than 2400. This means I must manually abort the dialer, at which point I get a 'login incorrect, try again' message from the remote system. 3. When I bring up the dial menu, I can use the keyboard to move a cursor around the menu. The cursor even moves out of the dialog box if I make it. (this is just a cosmetic problem.) 4. One time, while I was editing a file while online, I attempted to delete a block. This caused the file to be 'garbaged' -- some characters were doubled, random ASCII values were added. I have not been able to reproduce this problem. (could it have something to do with the word wrap?). As you can see, there are a lot of bugs here, some of which render the program unusable. However, the program seems to have tremendous potential, and many times, using Flash 1.6, I have longed for some of the advanced features of Storm. I will keep STorm around for awhile longer in the hope that the bugs will be fixed, but until they are, I can't justify sending in my $20. -Devin ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 141 Wed Jan 19, 1994 R.SNYDER6 [Roger S.] at 00:21 EST I decided to try Storm with my Internet server as a prelude to registering it and using it. (I really haven't had much time to give it a workout recently.) I also find that Zmodem doesn't work with the server, though it seems to work elsewhere. If I can get that to work, and I can get my terminal setting to "stick" in the dial directory it might be time to move on from Flash. --Roger ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 142 Wed Jan 19, 1994 BPENNER at 00:51 EST BALKCOM How did you resolve that RTS/CTS is not the problem? Your problem sounds like the classic RTS/CTS bug. The problem does not occur at lower speeds as the speed is low enough that buffers are not typically overflowed. When operating at higher speeds, funny things can begin to happen. The problem that generally occurs is an interupt problem where too many interupts are happening too quickly for the system to get all of the tasks completed in time to properly set the handshaking control lines. This is what usually leads to buffer overflow problems. What is your hardware configuration? 8 MHz? Using the standard MFP serial port? Bill Penner ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 143 Wed Jan 19, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 08:44 EST I have had problems getting Zmodem to work with my TT in any situation, even null-modemed directly to my ST or my PC. Bill P., Great to see you here! Folks, Bill's the author of the standard serial fix for the ST, and knows his stuff. Al ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 144 Wed Jan 19, 1994 M.HILL13 [Mike] at 18:40 EST Devin, Ditto on the Zmodem problem. Odd that we all have the same problem when dealing with an internet server. On your dialer not receiving a connect message. I had a similiar problem in that when having a bunch of boards selected for dialing it would have to eventually hit the timeout period I had set before calling the next bbs to try to connect. I found that turning off the "use DCD for connect" (or whatever the name of that option) worked like a charm. I guess Storm with that option set needs to see a Carrie Detect or it will wait until the timeout. I just have "CONNECT" in the section for connect messages and that works fine for me on my 14.4K modem at any speed connection. Since the bulk of my communication time (on the ST) is connecting to the Unix/Internet box at work, the Zmodem bug is the one glaring bug keeping me from using this program. Maybe Alan could add some debugging option to log the info coming from a system during a Zmodem download. Could help him nail that bug. Mike ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 145 Wed Jan 19, 1994 BALKCOM [Devin] at 23:01 EST I verified that RTS/CTS is not the problem because it IS on. I know this because I can turn off the RTS/CTS in the software, and then large lists of text get corrupted. Turning it on in the software fixes this problem, something I assume it would not do if the modem was still set incorrectly. I will try turning off 'DCD for connect', I hadn't seen that before. These major problems still remain: ZMODEM on internet and terminal settings in the "dial directory" actually being selected. -Devin ------------ Category 8, Topic 2 Message 146 Thu Jan 20, 1994 R.PLAGGENBUR [Ralph / WA] at 21:10 EST Bill: Haven't seen a post by you in quite a while. If you have changed, what were you using before and why did you decide to switch? 3. Have you tried Storm and decided to stay with your older Software and why? 4. Is anyone using Strom with GENEVA? I'm still having trouble with the "classic" RTS/CTS bug. I followed everyone's advice and have "SERFIX20" installed in my auto folder. I'm using an old 520 ST (4 Meg RAM, ICD SCSI interface) and an Infotel 14.4K fax/modem. This combination of hardware works perfectly with Aladdin and Flash 2. With Storm however, long text segments get munged. Specifically, the text flows fine for a while and then simply stops. A produces the next prompt from the host machine, so I know the connection stays good. This is working with a Unix server BTW. Anyone have any other suggestions I should try to resolve this problem? I have had less trouble here on GEnie with the Storm ZMODEM than with any other transfer program. I have it set for CRC32, Long Timeouts, and Autostart with NO Upload or Download options. If you find that the Storm ZMODEM is unusable, you can always unload it and go back to using XYZ.TTP or some other external program until the bugs are fixed. V.32 MNP5 First Config: with HSMODA02 (to fix the serial port) DRVIN and MFP Works with Flash II just fine as well as Aladdin. Storm, however, won't even dial the phone. When I use the dial command, Storm just sits there until I use the Abort button. Then it dials the phone, connects and immediatly disconnects. Puzzling... Second Config: with SERFX20 (TOS14FX2 disabled) Works fine with Flash II and Aladdin. Storm will dial correctly, connect and begin receiving. After about a half-page of text, a ^Q shows up on the screen and the display stops. If I hit the connection continues and after one incorrect login attempt (from my script) it correctly logs in. Any long text transmission from the host to the Atari results in the ^Q frozen display sequence. A always gets it started again.
