This preview of Willie's Adventures does not require a hard disk drive to work, although the final version will. IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ! ----------------------- The vertical synchronization frequency is set to 50Hz on both VGA and RGB monitors. Some old monitors may have trouble with this frequency, and a few even still might become damaged. You should check the technical specifications of your monitor before trying to run the game. New Beat Development takes absolutely no responsibility for damaged monitors for the use or misuse of this program. 1.2 Compatibility To our knowledge, this game is fully compatible with all known hardware and software accelerators and screen enhancements such as Screen Blaster and Blow Up. When using screen enhancers to increase the resolution, more system memory is consumed which directly affects the game. Users with only 4Mb of RAM should disable the screen enhancer to free as much memory as possible. 1.3 Distribution This preview of Willie's Adventures is freeware. It may only be copied and passed on freely if it is left unchanged and contains all relevant files. Commercial sale of this preview is strictly prohibited. This preview of Willie's Adventures may not be distributed on the cover disk of any magazine without the express written permission of the authors. This limitation does not apply to electronic (or non-profit) magazines. 2 OVERVIEW -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 Preface Finally! I know that many people have been waiting for a new version of our game, and some have probably even given up the hope. Not to fear however as the game is still on track and progressing in a much more advanced stage than ever before. What possibly could be taking so long? Here is a short list of improvements since our last preview release: * Greatly improved graphics and sound. * More advanced scrolling of the screen. * Larger levels (to save disk space, the size of the level in this preview is only 1280x960 pixels). * More and much improved animations. * Animated items to be collected to improve certain skills, etc. (not included in this preview). * Animated enemies, all of them with their own unique personality. * MIDI support. (not included in this preview). * Willie, the main character skills has improved. He is now not only able to jump, but climb on different things, defend himself, duck, etc. We have been working hard and the program code has been completely rewritten to make certain the game will operate at full speed even on a standard Falcon030. The final version will take advantage of the extra power provided by hardware accelerators such as the Nemesis from Black Scorpion Software. As you can see, we are working very hard for the completion of this game and rest assured, it will be completed soon. Thank you for your patience. 2.2 Overview Willie is a eight way scrolling adventure game that expands many levels of bizarre, wonderfully twisted worlds. Many beautiful worlds await your exploration and conquering. Armed with your wits and skills, only you, in the end, can save Willie and the world the sad fate that awaits. In this preview of Willie, you are allowed to explore only one rather small level. Other not yet added features, such as more enemies, intricate level designs, intro, ending, etc. have been postponed from this version to save on disk space and time. 2.3 An outline of the story Willie was a painter. He created worlds upon worlds of images that often seemed alive. So great was his paintings that people derived happiness, a sense of serenity whenever they gazed upon his paintings. They touched the heart, the very soul of any individual who looked upon them. Everyone questioned where he got these images from, even Willie himself. As he was drawing perhaps one of his greatest paintings one day, a peculiar feeling came over him as the images came to life within his painting. They nipped and snarled at him. Willie, in fright, jumped back from the painting and hid in the corner of the room. They reached for him like an octopus, grabbing his painting arm, which still held the paintbrush, and pulling it into the painting. The painting swirled and twirled when the paintbrush grazed its surface, like a rock piercing the water of a small pond, causing ripples of colours to dance and abound throughout the room. The paint melted and sloshed off the painting. Each drop with a mind of it's own, swishing and swashing here and there, coating the room with colors that danced with life and music. Willie was afraid! The paint screamed a word with such force that Willie felt the very life force pound within his soul, a word that explained all, and forgotten in an instance. Willie, dazed, was barely aware of his surroundings, barely aware of the paint washing over him, of his very body transforming, and then blackness. 3 THE JUNGLE ADVENTURE -------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 Find the exit In this preview all you have to do is help Willie find the exit sign that is located somewhere in the jungle. Of course you will have to be carefull as some guys will do everything to make sure you do not reach it. 4 GAME CONTROLS -------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.1 Joystick The CX-40 joystick is not supported at all as it does not provide enough controls. 4.2 Keyboard Control, alternate, and the cursor keys are used to control Willie when using the keyboard. The left and right cursor keys are used to move Willie in the left and right directions. Up and down when Willie is climbing. Down is also used to make Willie duck. The alternate key is used to make Willie jump, and the control key to defend himself. Although the keyboard is supported, I would recommend everyone to buy an Atari Jaguar compatible Joypad for maximum control. 4.3 Joypad The game can be controlled by an Atari Jaguar compatible joypad if port A is used. Use the stearing-cross to make Willie walk in the left and right directions, climb, and duck. The B button is used to make Willie jump and the A button to defend himself. 5 THE NEW BEAT DEVELOPMENT MAILING LIST -------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.1 General information The New Beat Development mailing is available to everyone interested in high quality software for Atari compatible computers.
