* * * * * * * * Quick guide to GOLDEN ISLAND demoversion * * * * * * * * 1) System requirements Golden Island needs an Atari Falcon with at least 4MB RAM and a VGA monitor. Control is via keyboard, joystick or, better still, the Atari Jaguar Joypad. Start the game from any standard Falcon resolution (that is, with ScreenBlaster, BlowUp or any other resolution enhancement disabled). 2) Installation on hard disk Copy the contents of the GI_DEMO folder into any desired position on your hard disk. 3) Aim of the game Collect all gold pieces spread over various areas on the island. You must also destroy the enemy trains; this is accomplished by making them collide or run into buffers. Finally you must reach your destination/target-cross. The colour of this cross can be seen in the middle of the lower part of the screen. The tar- get colour is determined by driving over a special "H-track". 4) Controlling the game a) Title screen Start playing at the selected track by pressing the key. Adjust the volume of the music/sound FX with the and keys. Select sound options with the key: Music - During gameplay there is music for your listening pleasure. Note: music during gameplay may cause flickering sprites. External - A Golden Island speciality: if the music of the game is not quite your cup of tea, you have the possibility to enjoy music from a CD- or cassette-player connected to the microphone input at the rear of the Falcon. No sound - This setting is especially implemented for lovers of silence... SFX - To enhance playing pleasure, sound effects are activated in this mode (but not in this demoversion, unfortunately). The extremely lousy internal speaker of the Falcon can be turned on (-Oh, stop it!) or off (-Ah, that's better!) with the key. If you are the happy owner of an Atari Jaguar Joypad, select control via "Joypad" with the key. b) Track screens The cursor (blue square) can be moved within action range of the train with the arrow keys/joystick/joypad. If activated // directly over the train, the cursor will open up the cargo area lid. By doing so, the cursor transforms into a crane. This crane can be used to pick up gold pieces by moving it accordingly and clicking // again. The gold pieces must then be placed inside the cargo area, and dropping them there causes the lid to close and the crane to transform into a cursor again. The train will not move with the lid open. You may change the status of a switch or stop-signal by moving the cursor over it and clicking. Adjust the speed of the train with the <+>/ and <->, or and keys. Further explanation of the various on-screen elements can be found with the key. 5) Extra objects At the start of level 1 you will find a "speeder", and continued gameplay will reveal more objects. To pick up these objects, just run over them! You can activate the extra objects by pressing their corresponding -/<1-5(joypad)> key. These are the extra objects: Speeder - (blue ball) gives your train maximum speed for as long as the speeder lasts, or until you hit something (don't!). Hammer - repairs damage on your train caused by careless driving... Shovel - is used to remove heaps of rocks covering gold pieces. Dynamite - blows up enemy trains! + and - - increases and decreases available time. 6) Limitations in demoversion * Only the first two tracks are playable. * The demoversion has less graphics and no title music. * Game-save and game-load is disabled. * No sound effects. 7) Status This Golden Island demoversion is Public Domain, and may be spread in its entirety via BBSes and cover disks. 8) Credits Author of Golden Island (plus of course this demoversion) is Olaf Gthe.
